SAPS won't contact you when your status changes. We will.

Firearm licence applications take 90 to 180+ days. Your application moves through multiple stages — DFO, Provincial DFO, CFR — and SAPS will never notify you. Most applicants miss status changes entirely and take no action when they're supposed to.

What we track

All three application types in one place.

New Firearm Licence
First-time licence applications for any firearm category.
Competency Certificate
Track from submission through to approval and collection.
Licence Renewal
Stay on top of renewals so you're never caught without a valid licence.

Expect a long wait — here's what's normal

SAPS processing times vary by province and backlog. These are realistic ranges.

Competency Certificate
30–90 days
Generally quicker than a full licence. Your competency must be approved before SAPS will accept your licence application, so get this in early.
New Licence
90–180+ days
New licence applications are the slowest. Once your application reaches the Licencing Section it can sit there for months before moving — this is where most of the wait happens.
Licence Renewal
30–60 days
The quickest of the three. Don't leave it until your current licence expires — submit early and track your renewal so you're never caught out.

Common questions

Everything you need to know before signing up.

Where do I find my SAPS reference number?
Your reference number is sent to you via SMS once the DFO (Designated Firearms Officer) has captured your application into the system. DFOs have up to 6 weeks to do this after submission, so don't panic if you haven't received it yet. If it's been longer than 6 weeks, follow up at the station where you applied.
Can I apply for my competency and licence at the same time?
No. SAPS requires a valid competency certificate before they'll accept a licence application — your DFO won't take the SAPS 271 form without it. You can prepare your licence documents while you wait so you're ready to submit the moment your competency comes through.
Do I need to download an app?
No. ApplicationTracker is entirely web-based. Sign up, add your reference number, and we WhatsApp you the moment anything changes. No app to install, no notifications to enable.
Is it really free?
Yes, completely. Tracking your application and receiving WhatsApp alerts is 100% free with no subscriptions or hidden fees. We keep the lights on through optional advertising in notifications.
Is my data safe?
Yes. We only store what's needed to run the service, comply with POPIA, and never share your data with third parties. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from your account settings.
